Mental Health Housing Foundation is a private nonprofit corporation organized in 1990 by a group of people—service providers and family members—who wanted to support those living with mental illness in their efforts to live independently. The founders were deeply concerned about the lack of affordable housing for those recovering from serious and persistent mental illness in South King County, an area with few housing resources for the mentally ill.

Our primary role is that of a landlord. We develop and operate affordable rental housing dedicated to people living with chronic mental illness, enrolled in the public mental health system. We have single-family homes shared by several people as housemates, small apartment buildings offering both private units and family housing, and condominium units integrated within larger condominium communities.

Our Mission

Mental Health Housing Foundation provides permanent, independent, affordable housing for those who live with chronic mental illness. We pursued this goal by developing and maintaining affordable supported housing properties for individuals enrolled in the public mental health system. Mental Health Housing Foundation recognizes permanent housing is critical to ensuring that those living with mental illness have access to the services they need to thrive and live, as independently as possible, in their communities.
