The three single
family houses known as the D Street Homes are Mental Health Housing Foundation’s
first project. They are located at 101 D Street SW, 105 D Street SW and 222 D
Street SW. The property is adjacent to downtown Auburn and the new commuter
rail terminal. As a group, these homes have proven to be a valuable resource
for the very low-income people enrolled in Seattle Mental Health’s program.
Each of these homes presents different challenges in
management.
Affordable housing
shared in single-family homes has become increasingly important as mental health
services are cut. Discharges from Western State Hospital and the loss of
supervised living beds have put much more pressure on community housing to
accommodate these displaced people. Seattle Mental Health provides substantial
support services within the homes of the tenants on D Street that enables them
to live successfully in the community.
105 D ST SW
This small
2-bedroom cottage has
housed the same two tenants
since 1998. They remain very
proud of their home after spending
much of their lives in supervised
living facilities. Cleanliness and
household maintenance are not their
strong points; they would not be able
to live here without Seattle Mental
Health support services.

Fact: Stigma erodes confidence that mental disorders are real,
treatable health conditions. We have allowed stigma and a now unwarranted sense
of hopelessness to erect attitudinal, structural and financial barriers to
effective treatment and recovery.
