222 D Street

The three single family houses known as the D Street Homes are Mental Health Housing Foundation’s first project.  They are located at 101 D Street SW, 105 D Street SW and 222 D Street SW.  The property is adjacent to downtown Auburn and the new commuter rail terminal.  As a group, these homes have proven to be a valuable resource for the very low-income people enrolled in Seattle Mental Health’s program.

Affordable housing shared in single-family homes has become increasingly important as mental health services are cut.  Discharges from Western State Hospital and the loss of supervised living beds have put much more pressure on community housing to accommodate these displaced people.  Seattle Mental Health (SMH) provides substantial support services within the homes of the tenants on D Street that enables them to live successfully in the community.

Each of these homes presents different challenges in management.

222 D ST SW

MHHF originally purchased this
3-bedroom house to prevent the
displacement of five elderly mentally
ill people who rented this house
from a private landlord who had put
the property up for sale.  While the
conditions were crowded, they were
stable and happy.  As time passed the
original tenants either died or moved
on to nursing homes.  This house now
serves three people, one per bedroom.

Fact:  Early identification and treatment is of vital importance.  By getting people the treatment they need early, recovery is accelerated and the brain is protected from further harm related to the course of illness.
