Buchheit Gardens

Buchheit Gardens provides affordable
housing for 9 households with
incomes between 30% and 50% of
the median in King County, and 5
households with a primary member
enrolled in the public mental health
system with household incomes no
higher than 30% of the King County
median income.  The MHHF maintenance
manager, who provides maintenance
services at all MHHF property, uses the
15th unit at this site.

Under the terms of a contract between
Seattle Mental Health (SMH) and MHHF, SMH provides supportive mental health services for those enrolled in the public mental health system, is responsible for selecting and screening mental health qualified tenants, and manages their tenancy.  MHHF staff market and manage the tenancy of non-mental health tenants and assists non-mental health tenants in finding support services through government and other non-profit agencies as needs arise.

MHHF completed a fundraising campaign for Buchheit Gardens in 2006.  The purpose of this campaign was to replace all of the windows and patio doors with energy efficient vinyl windows.  Most of the existing metal framed windows, although double pane, failed, and sweat inside the apartment created an environment that was conducive to mold and mildew.  Very soon MHHF will kick off fundraising campaigns to replace the siding on A building and re-pave the parking lot.

Fact:  Mental illnesses are biologically based brain disorders.  They cannot be overcome through "will power" and are not related to a person's "character" or intelligence.
